At 21:58 on 28th June, day 29 of my walk, I managed to cross the 345 mile line, finishing at 21:58 at Manchester Piccadilly Station.
Starting on 31 May, I have walked 345 miles across London, Middlesbrough and Manchester to raise awareness of young people’s mental health and to fundraise for Support For Us, a charity being launched to provide training and resources around young people’s mental health. Starting on Union Street, SE1, I walked round London for 6 days, before commuting to Middlesbrough where I walked for 5 days. I then travelled to Manchester for the last stretch of this walk, where I was meant to walk for 6 days. Sadly, due to delays, including where my phone and broken in London leading to less miles walked, I hadn’t managed to finish by the end of day 17 and I still had 95 miles left. Having returned to work on the 17th of June, I had restricted time available to walk but managed to squeeze in walks before and after work, as well as on my days off. Having work meant that it would take longer to finished but I pushed on and managed to complete the 345 miles.
After 254 hours and 21 minutes of walking (including breaks), I arrived at the entrance of Manchester Piccadilly Station just in time to get last train home.
Throughout the walk, I had to make changes to my plans. Where I was meant to walk set routes, breaking my phone led this to not being possible in London. Having broken it on day 2, I was hopeful to get the phone on day 4. On day 3, I stuck to my planned route but cut it a few miles short, with some delays caused by difficulties accessing Google Maps. On days 4, 5 and 6, however, I ended up staying within the vicinity of the phone shop waiting for the phone, which ended up being available near the end of day 6, just in time for my commute to Middlesbrough. On reflection, my planned routes involved a lot of public transport to and from the start and end points, so I decided to focus on walking the distance rather than the set routes. Having a pushchair was of a massive help due to difficulties carrying rucksacks, however it also led me to walking slower than anticipated due to the strain of having to push it up hills and control it down hills. Gravel and bumpy surfaces also proved difficult at times.
Fundraising proved slow to begin with, where I set an ambitious target on GoFundMe of ÂŁ1000. Things were very slow at first however once the walk started, especially whilst I was in Manchester, donations shot up and I have managed to jump from ÂŁ200 on 8th June to over ÂŁ1300 on 27th June to ÂŁ2000 on 28th June.
Thank you for all the support and donations. I haven’t been very active on Facebook/Instagram/X due to the time consuming nature of it and having little engagement however I have been doing multiple Tik Tok lives a day where I would get many views, support and donations.
With thanks to everybody, I have managed to raise over ÂŁ2000 so far. Thank you to everyone who has shown their support and/or donated. As somebody known for getting buses a quarter of a mile, it has been a big challenge for me to complete this but it has been a great one.
