The waves of life

In life, we have our ups and downs; our good and our bad days. When we experience a failed attempt at something, whether it be a job interview, creating something or completing everyday tasks, it’s too easy to think that the failure defines you. The same goes for bad days; when a bad day happens, it’s too easy to think that it’s a bad week, a bad month or even a bad year.

With life, we all have our ups and downs. We may have the best day, where we spend time with loved ones doing something very enjoyable. Other days, however, we may have a bad day, where we’ve just received terrible news, we are overly stressed by our workloads or we have burnout.

When we look at life or, more specifically mental health, there will be ups and downs throughout life. Regardless of whether or not somebody experiences a diagnosable mental health condition, their mental health will go up and down. Some days may be great. Other days things may be difficult. Difficult periods may last a few hours, a few days or maybe longer. What we should focus on, though, is the glass being half full as opposed to half empty.

When reflecting on things, whether recent or from years ago, it is too easy for us to focus on the negatives that happened on that day.  “It was great how we did x, y and z…but____”.

We may think we had an awful month, when in fact it was only 1 or 2 days out of the month that were awful whilst the rest of the month was great.

Life will always have ups and downs. We all have our bad days and that’s ok. These bad days do not define us.
