A sigh of fresh air

From the age of 5, I grew up in a large house with a large back garden. Throughout my childhood, I spent a lot of time in the back garden, including using a trampoline, pogo stick and bicycle. Due to having a back garden, I don’t have any memories of going to the park; I know of going multiple times under the age of 5 however, after that, I am only aware of a few instances. When I entered my teen years, however, I used to go to the parks multiple times a week. In a bad mood? I’d go to the park. Have some time to kill? I’d go to the park.

Despite my age, I would go to park multiple times a week, usually for 10-15 minutes at a time but sometimes longer.

For me, going on park apparatus that spin or swinging on the swings was a way for me to distract myself from what was going on in life and be present in the moment to relax.

Whilst, for many, this can be done by watching TV, reading a book or meditating, I find it helps me to either go for a walk or go to the park.

When I am out and about, especially when listening to music, I find that I manage to distract myself by:

  • Relaxing in the moment, typically if I have music playing
  • Daydream
  • Distract myself by window shopping

A question I have been asked many times is that, considering I grew up with a large garden, why don’t I just sit in the back garden rather than go to the park? For me, irrespective of if I live with family or live on my own or even if I’m in a hotel, if I need to clear my head I feel that I need to physically leave the premises of where I’m staying.

What I choose to do when I need to clear my thoughts depend on a variety of factors including the mood I’m in, where I am and the weather however these are just what I personally do. No two people are the same and it can take time to find out what works for you.
